White House Monitoring Iran’s Leadership Future as Mojtaba Khamenei Emerges as Possible Successor

The White House said Wednesday that U.S. intelligence agencies are closely monitoring reports suggesting Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, could become the country’s next supreme leader.

Speaking to reporters, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the U.S. government is aware of the speculation but said officials are still waiting for more clarity.

“We’ve seen those reports as well, of course, and this is something that our intelligence agencies are looking at,” Leavitt said. “The truth is, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Trump Administration Discussing Iran’s Future

Leavitt also revealed that President Donald Trump has been holding discussions with senior advisers about what role the United States could play in Iran once the current military operation concludes.

According to the White House, Trump and his national security team are evaluating possible scenarios for Iran’s political future following the death of the country’s longtime leader.

However, Leavitt emphasized that the administration’s immediate priority remains the success of the ongoing military campaign.

“The president is actively discussing these issues with his national security team,” she said. “But right now the focus is on ensuring the operation achieves its objectives.”

Mojtaba Khamenei Seen as Leading Candidate

Mojtaba Khamenei has long been viewed as a powerful but largely behind-the-scenes figure within Iran’s ruling system.

Over the years, he has reportedly built strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while gaining influence among conservative clerical networks inside the Islamic Republic.

Following the death of his father, several reports have suggested that Mojtaba has emerged as one of the most likely candidates to succeed him as Iran’s supreme leader.

If confirmed, it would represent a historic moment for Iran, potentially marking the first father-to-son transition of power in the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

Debate Over U.S. Military Campaign

Leavitt also defended the objectives of the joint U.S.–Israeli military campaign against Iran, which has faced criticism from some observers who argue Washington has not provided clear evidence of an immediate threat posed by Tehran.

The White House insists the operation is necessary to counter Iran’s missile and nuclear ambitions.

According to Leavitt, President Trump believes that American public opinion supports the military effort.

“The president believes the American people understand the stakes and support this mission,” she said.

As the conflict continues and Iran’s leadership future remains uncertain, analysts say the coming weeks could determine both the direction of the Iranian government and the broader geopolitical balance in the Middle East.
