Robots Join Lunar New Year Celebrations in China with AI-Powered Performances

As China prepares to welcome the Lunar New Year, it’s not only families and communities getting ready to celebrate — robots are also taking center stage.

In Beijing, four humanoid robots dressed in colorful traditional lion dance costumes performed a rehearsal at a shopping mall, drawing crowds of curious onlookers. Standing about 95 centimeters (3 feet) tall, the robots bent their knees, swayed left and right, shook decorative masks, and repeated synchronized dance movements in preparation for upcoming festivities.

🎊 Technology Meets Tradition

The performances are part of a growing trend in China where technology blends with cultural celebrations. For the second consecutive year, one of Beijing’s Lunar New Year temple fairs will feature a strong focus on robotics and artificial intelligence.

Visitors will see robots:

  • Performing traditional dances

  • Demonstrating martial arts movements

  • Acting in Peking Opera-style routines

  • Reciting poetry

  • Playing soccer

  • Stacking blocks to build small towers

  • Preparing traditional snacks like candied hawthorn skewers

Organizers say this year’s event showcases a major leap in technological refinement.

“The number of robots has significantly increased,” said one member of the organizing committee. “Their movements are more precise, their coordination is smoother, and the high-tech experience feels much stronger than last year.”

🧠 Powered by Artificial Intelligence

The robots were developed by Chinese tech startups, including Booster Robotics, which plans to showcase around 20 humanoid machines during the fair.

Unlike earlier robotic displays that relied heavily on remote control, many of these machines now operate in an AI-driven environment. Once activated, they make decisions and control their own movements without human intervention.

For example, during soccer demonstrations, once the whistle blows, human operators step back and the robots independently coordinate their play.

🚀 China’s Growing Robotics Ambitions

China has been rapidly investing in advanced robotics and artificial intelligence, aiming to develop machines capable of performing increasingly complex tasks.

While the robots are impressive, human assistance is still required in certain situations — such as dressing them in costumes or repositioning them if they malfunction during performances.

Even so, industry leaders believe robotics will continue to evolve quickly.

“Technology is advancing every day,” organizers said. “As long as we keep up with innovation, these events will continue to grow and adapt with the times.”

As Lunar New Year approaches, the celebration in Beijing symbolizes more than tradition — it reflects China’s ambition to merge cultural heritage with cutting-edge AI innovation.
