Kim Jong-un Oversees Strategic Cruise Missile Test From New North Korean Destroyer

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has overseen the test launch of strategic cruise missiles from a newly constructed destroyer, highlighting the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its naval and nuclear capabilities.

According to state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim inspected the destroyer Choe Hyon during a visit to a shipyard in the western port city of Nampho earlier this week.

During the inspection on Tuesday and Wednesday, Kim reviewed the crew’s combat training and evaluated the vessel’s operational readiness.

Missile Launch Demonstrates Warship Capabilities

On Wednesday, Kim personally oversaw the launch of sea-to-surface strategic cruise missiles from the destroyer. Officials described the missile test as a key demonstration of the ship’s combat capabilities.

North Korea’s use of the term “strategic” typically indicates that the weapons may be capable of carrying nuclear warheads, though the exact specifications of the missiles were not disclosed.

KCNA reported that Kim considered the missile test a “core element” of the destroyer’s operational performance.

A New Symbol of Naval Power

The destroyer Choe Hyon, unveiled in April last year, is a 5,000-ton multipurpose warship designed to enhance North Korea’s naval strength.

Following a shakedown cruise earlier in the week, Kim described the vessel as a “new symbol of sea defense capability.”

“Our Navy's forces for attacking from under and above water will grow rapidly,” Kim was quoted as saying.

He added that efforts to equip the navy with nuclear weapons were progressing “satisfactorily.”

Plans to Expand Warship Production

Kim also called for an ambitious expansion of North Korea’s naval fleet.

According to KCNA, he ordered the construction of two warships of the same class or more advanced every year for the next five years.

During the visit, Kim also inspected a third Choe Hyon-class destroyer currently under construction at the shipyard.

North Korea has been accelerating its naval modernization program. In June last year, the country launched another 5,000-ton destroyer named Kang Kon, though the vessel had previously tipped over during an initial launch attempt.

Pyongyang has announced plans to complete another destroyer of the same class by October 2026.

Part of a Broader Military Expansion

Kim’s inspection came shortly after the conclusion of a weeklong congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, which ended on February 25.

During the meeting, North Korea announced a new five-year defense strategy, pledging to continue producing nuclear weapons and developing advanced strategic military systems.

Sniper Competition Marks Military Event

In a separate report, KCNA said Kim also oversaw a sniper shooting competition involving units from the Korean People’s Army (KPA) to commemorate “Sniper’s Day.”

Kim emphasized the importance of elite marksmanship in military training.

He reportedly instructed commanders to train “all-round snipers capable of matching a hundred enemies.”

Analysis

The missile test underscores North Korea’s continued focus on expanding its military capabilities despite international sanctions.

By strengthening its naval fleet and developing nuclear-capable cruise missiles, Pyongyang appears to be working toward diversifying its nuclear delivery systems. A stronger naval force could allow North Korea to project power beyond its borders and increase strategic pressure in regional waters.

For neighboring countries such as South Korea and Japan, as well as the United States, these developments are likely to raise further concerns about regional security and the evolving nature of North Korea’s military strategy.
